The Clinton Conservation District is seeking an applicant for an open MAEAP Technician position in the St Johns USDA Field Office located in Clinton County, Michigan. This position administers the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) MAEAP program in Clinton County. MAEAP is an innovative, proactive program that helps farms of all sizes and all commodities voluntarily prevent and minimize agricultural pollution risks. This position will be responsible for the delivery of on-farm technical assistance including risk-assessments, coordination of local, state and federal resources to help reduce on-farm risks and assisting producers in making progress towards MAEAP verification. The MAEAP Technician position is funded by an annually-renewed statewide grant program through MDARD. A bachelors degree in natural resources or agriculture-related sciences is required and familiarity with Clinton County agricultural practices is very helpful. The candidate should have a good aptitude for customer service, the ability to multitask and be willing to do
site visits on farms and to woodlots.

MAEAP (Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program) Technician POSITION DESCRIPITION

The Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) is an innovative, proactive program that
helps farms of all sizes and all commodities voluntarily prevent and minimize agricultural pollution risks. This
position will administer MAEAP in Clinton County and is responsible for the delivery of on-farm technical
assistance including risk-assessments, coordination of local, state and federal resources to help reduce on-farm
risks, and assist producers in making progress towards MAEAP verification. The MAEAP Technician will also be
responsible for collaborating with conservation district staff to promote district programs, Natural Resource
Conservation Service (NRCS) programs, and in delivery of educational programming on sustainable agriculture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Carry out the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) in Clinton County:
a. Provide on-farm, one-on-one technical assistance, using farm specific risk assessments
b. Promote MAEAP, Clean Sweep events, pesticide container recycling, equipment calibration and
other stewardship practices using displays, newsletters, group presentations, demonstrations,
public service announcements, news releases, radio programs, etc.
c. Develop conservation and emergency management plans with producers
d. Assist producers in learning about and in the implementation of conservation practices
e. Coordinate abandoned well closures, conduct well sampling and perform irrigation uniformity
testing, as needed
f. Assist Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) with Right to Farm
complaints to bring farm into compliance with Generally Accepted Agriculture Management
Practices (GAAMPs)
g. Maintain client confidentiality
2. Maintain accurate and well-organized records
3. Provide timely reports and updates to the Board of Directors
4. Support District activities and other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture; natural resources management;
horticulture; agronomy; animal, crop, environmental, dairy, or soil science or a related degree program is
required.
Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in natural resources or agricultural fieldwork is preferred.
Other:
1. Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
2. Knowledge of ArcGIS and/or other mapping software
3. Exhibit excellent social and interpersonal skills; relate to diverse clientele and work groups
4. Able to work independently of direct supervision and as part of a team
5. Must be able to work outdoors in varying conditions and traverse rough terrain; work includes both
office and field work
6. Maintain a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle for work use (mileage is reimbursed)
7. Must be able to pass a federal background check
COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time 40 hour per week position, funded through MDARD with the Clinton Conservation District at
the St. Johns USDA Service Center, 2343 N US Highway 27, St. Johns Michigan. Hours will typically be 8am to
4:30pm with occasional events on evenings or weekends, and overnights for training.
Salary is based on qualifications and will start at $19-20 per hour. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick
time and access to the District’s Flex Plan which includes access to an optional retirement savings plan.
