Crop Assessment System:
Crop*A*Syst will provide farmers with accurate information about how
their management practices might be affecting water Resources.
When higher risk practices are being used, alternative lower risk
practices are identified that they can use on their farm. Up to 4
recertification credits are available for completing a Crop*A*Syst.
Small Farm Assessment System:
The development of the Small-Farm*A*Syst is based on the original
Farm*A*Syst tool that was introduced in 1994 to be used at larger
commercial production facilities.
Now small farms or individuals who own farm animals have a chance to
receive the same help and assistance from the Small-Farm*A*Syst tool.
It is designed to address specific pollution risks particular to
smaller farms using Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program (MGSP)
concepts and Right-to-Farm (RTF) guidelines.
It was developed to promote environmental stewardship following state
and federal laws as well as the Michigan Right-to-Farm generally
accepted agricultural and management practices (GAAMPs).
These assessments are free, voluntary and strictly confidential.
Their purpose is to inform farmers of any risks existing on the farm
and how those risks may be eliminated through the use of simple
solutions. Recommendations are noted in the assessment manuals
and are left with the farmers for future reference.
This program is funded through PA216 of 1994, which assesses a
surcharge on nitrate fertilizers and pesticides. The revenues
generated are to be used to help farmers and homeowners to undertake
management changes that will reduce the threat of groundwater
contamination on their property.
